MESH Benefit Concert 2024
The trademark MESH event of the regular school year is the MESH Benefit Concert. Typically held in the spring (this time outdoors in the SHS quad), MESH mentors will also work with and rehearse with Redwood students to perform music at a benefit concert to benefit Harmony Project San Francisco, a nonprofit organization that brings music education to underserved youth in the Bay Area. Participation in this event is open to any Redwood music students regardless of participation in the MESH private lesson program. ​

​Celebrate the Season with the SHS Winter Concert Series!

Get ready to kick off the holidays with the SHS Music Department’s Winter Concert Series!
The concerts open with the SHS Percussion Studio on November 19 at 7pm in the SHS Music Building (M101).

Then join us at the McAfee Center for a joyful lineup of performances: SHS & RMS Choir and the SHS Jazz Band on December 4, the SHS Orchestra on December 9, and the SHS Band on December 11, all at 7pm.

Come enjoy an evening of music, community, and winter cheer as our talented students take the stage!

FALL SHOWCASE & SENIOR NIGHT 

Friday, October 10th, 6pm McAfee

​Join us for a wonderful evening showcasing performances by Orchestra and Choir in the McAfee Center at 6pm followed by Senior Night at the Benny Pierce Field. We will be honoring all of the music department's graduating Seniors and afterwards conclude with the Marching Band and Color Guard Finale.

Saratoga Music Boosters supports Saratoga Union School District (SUSD) and Saratoga High School (SHS) by helping its music directors, where needed, to accomplish their visions to offer the best music programs, music clinics as well as many enriching opportunities to its students. This includes ensuring all music students have the possibility to attend important performances that require travel regardless of their family’s financial situation.

There are two beloved fundraisers Saratoga Music Boosters hold every year: the Cookie dough fundraiser and the Pancake Breakfast. All schools participate to help raise funds for the booster. The idea of the Cookie Dough is of course to sell as many cookie dough orders as possible and for the latter the Booster offers a beautiful pancake breakfast where all music programs showcase their talents as pancakes are devoured. These two fundraising events are a student and community favorite. 

Over the 2023-24 fiscal year, Saratoga Music Boosters supported the following Saratoga High School music programs and music students:

Band (175 students including Marching and Concert Band), Jazz Band (35 students), Color Guard (31 students), Winter Guard (29 students), Winter Percussion (77 students), Orchestra (167 students), and Choir (41 students).
 
Not only do the music programs receive SMB support, the initiative by the music directors to offer concerto competitions is also made possible thanks to SMB. This includes the support to invite 5 adjudicators to judge all student performances. The winners of this competition perform at the end of year concert. 

SHS musicians reached a level of accomplishment, performances and recognition for which SMB is truly proud of.

Saratoga Music Boosters is proud to report a slight uptick in music student enrollment at Redwood Middle School (RMS) even though general school enrollment is on the decline. 

The numbers are as follows:
5th grade instrumental: 135 (this includes all three elementary schools Saratoga, Foothill and Argonaut)
RMS Bands (Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Marching): 186, RMS Choir: 25, RMS Orchestra: 170, Color Guard: 12

In summary RMS band, orchestra, and choir in school at Redwood spread across 13 different classes/sections. This translates to having over 400 students enrolled in in-school music classes at Redwood. One of the beloved opportunities offered by the program is the ability to travel to Disney and the RMS band and orchestra students performed and behaved so wonderfully that Disney has extended the invitation for their return participation in the next year.

5th Grade Music: This year every student was offered an instrument. True statement from our elementary music director: ‘Thank you to SMB for buying us additional instruments. I was interviewed for a podcast – where I was questioned “What do you do when you don’t have enough instruments?” I realized I have not been in this position; I can ask for more if I need it SMB will support it. I feel fortunate to be here supported by this community.’ 

• 5th graders learn to play two types of instruments throughout the year: Stings and Wind.
• 5th grade students enjoy playing their instruments and some actually take them home to practice.

SMB approved the request from two directors to attend the online Bornoff Pedagogy Workshop

SMB Instruments 
This year this organization was pleased to purchase instruments as the music programs in its schools noted an uptick in attendance. This allowed all students the possibility to have an instrument in their hands and enjoy the full benefit of class instruction.

SMB is proud to offer the music directors the grants and student scholarships they need to make music opportunities accessible to all the students as well as bring outside music talents into the classroom and this year was another great success story.

THANKS TO THE LEGACY DONORS ❤️

We celebrated the introduction of 5th grade band program into the regular school day at Argonaut, Foothill and Saratoga in the fall of 2019! As part of this kickoff, we held a legacy campaign to which families and community members were invited to donate to Saratoga Music Boosters to purchase 130+ band instruments. The impressive lineup of instruments included 20 flutes, 50 clarinets, 35 trumpets, and 28 baritones in the legacy 5th grade set.

While COVID delayed the final piece of the campaign, the plaques recognizing our legacy donors will be displayed at all 3 Elementary school offices! Thanks to the legacy donors for their support of music in Saratoga and the huge impact to benefit all 5th graders!!

SHS SWE was a featured performing ensemble at California All-State Music Education Conference - CASMEC in early June. From a rigorous recording process to several letters of recommendation, this honor was a result of hard work and dedication from our wind ensemble. Recognitions and accolades.

In collaboration with our Booster Groups, PTSO, and Foundation, SHS is excited to relaunch the SHS Hall of Fame. We invite staff, alumni, families, and community members to nominate candidates for the SHS Hall of Fame of 2025. 

​We will announce the SHS 2025 Hall of Fame inductees in June 2025. PDF copies of the nomination forms are also available in the Main Office.)  Our gala event will be on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., at Villa Ragusa (35 S. Second St., Campbell, CA 95008).  We hope you will join us for a wonderful evening featuring a celebratory dinner, the induction ceremony, and a chance to honor and reconnect with the SHS community.

Saratoga High School
Music Programs at Saratoga High School include: Band, Jazz Band, Color Guard, Winter Guard, Winter Percussion, Orchestra, and Choir. Students in these music programs participated in several events and reached a level of accomplishment and recognition for which SMB is truly proud to be a booster for SHS’ music education:

• All of the strings, bands, choir students performed in their yearly and much loved SHS winter and end of year concerts. Finished with excellent results in the CMEA Festival. As well as participated in a two week Summer Central Europe Music Festival Tour traveling to Austria, Slovenia and Czech Republic.
• The Saratoga Foothill Club enjoyed a performance offered by the SHS Jazz Band and now they wish this to repeat. The Jazz band also participated in their SHS end of year concert. 
• Marching band and color guard performed during football half-time at home games as well as competed in several events throughout the year.
• Winter guard and winter percussion also competed in several events and performed for their SHS senior night where winter percussion won first place in their division.

Redwood Middle School
Saratoga Music Boosters is proud to report a slight uptick in music student enrollment at Redwood Middle School (RMS). RMS Music Programs include RMS Bands (Woodwind, Brass, Percussion), RMS Choir, RMS Orchestra, and Percussion Fundamentals (after-school). 

All the RMS music programs have had events and performances held throughout the year with achievements to be proud of:

• Performed in their Winter and Summer concerts
• Benefited from clinicians for sectional work throughout the year such as:
• Tracey Hurley (trumpet) and Tennessee O’Hanlon (clarinet)
• Having clinicians come does help to offer individual attention to those that need more help.
• ​Redwood sent 4 ensembles to participate in the CMEA festival hosted by SHS. This was the first festival experience for the majority of our students. 
• Bass students attended the San Francisco 2023 Winter Bass Bash
• 9 RMS students qualified to participate in CASMEC All-state
• RMS came 4th in the ranking overall with the number of kids accepted to participate in all-state and one of the students managed to be concertmaster for one of the orchestras. 
• A total of 188 students (band, orchestra & choir) traveled to Disney to attend workshops and hold performances

Argonaut, Foothill, and Saratoga Elementary School
5th grade is where the drive for music begins for SUSD students with the 5th Grade Beginning Instrumental Music Exploratory Program.

• For band, students learn either the euphonium/baritone, trumpet, clarinet, or flute. For string orchestra, students choose either the violin or viola
• Students start the year with instrument trials where they are fitted with one of their top two choices. When they receive their first instrument they are taught how to hold, care and assemble the instrument, as well as make their first sounds
• Half way through the year the students switch their instruments between band and orchestra

Our fabulous SHS Year-end and RMS Spring concerts are approaching!! Join us for musical celebrations that showcase our graduating classes and the various Band, Choir, Orchestra & Strings, Percussion and Jazz ensembles. Concerts begin at 7pm at Saratoga High School and are free of charge. Seating is on a first come, first served basis.

Saratoga "JV" 2024 will be performing "Macabre", a program that’ll rattle your bones. Inspired by the French legend of Danse Macabre, one night a year, Death summons the dead from under the ground to dance amongst their graves. Featuring music by Danny Elfman, it’s a party to die for!

Saratoga “Varsity” 2024 will be performing “Jazz in the Plazz”. An upbeat and joyful repertoire inspired by local summer music in the park events, where the community can come together to enjoy live music in the sunny afternoon. Perhaps you may recognize our show music, and have the opportunity to enjoy some live music performances during our show! 

Saturday, 3/2 - CCGC Show #2 @ Fremont High School

CCGC, California Color Guard Circuit, is a local competitive circuit based in Northern California. After competing at their first show, and receiving 2nd for Varsity and 3rd for JV, this is the second adjudicated performance of the year. Tickets available on-site, day of the performance.

WGI, Winter Guard International, is a globally recognized competitive circuit. The Varsity team will be heading to Union City to compete at the regional, returning for the first time since 2020. Tickets available on-site, day of the performance, and on wgi.org.

Saratoga "A" 2024 will be performing "Heartbound" which portrays the power of the heart – binding us like captives in a prison and breaking us free of any and all shackles.

Hello all parents, family members, and students! This is Jayden Ham from the Band MESH officer team, and we are excited to let you know that we will be holding our annual benefit concert for the Harmony Project! Harmony Project is an amazing non-profit organization that supports music education in underprivileged areas, and it is run by Mr. Seth Manone and Mr. Jerry Pannone, who have dedicated their lives and passion to helping students take on their passion for music. We will be holding the concert in the M101 building of Saratoga High School this year on Saturday, April 27th, from 3 - 5 PM. There will be incredible middle school chamber group ensembles who have been working extremely hard throughout the entire school year, and we can't wait to share their musicianship with you. The concerts are free to attend, but we highly encourage a donation of 30 dollars. All donations will proceed directly to the Harmony Project. If you have any questions or things to share with us, please contact [email protected], and we will respond to you as promptly as possible. Can't wait to see you all there!

What is a Music Festival?

Saratoga High School Music Department is pleased to host the CMEA festival, March 14-16, 2024!! Performances are open to families.

The California Music Educators Association (CMEA) is a federated unit of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). During CMEA festival each individual concert ensemble performs in 30 minute sets (30 minutes on-and-off-stage) for a panel of 3 performance judges, followed by sight-reading evaluation for a 4th judge. The judges use a rubric and classification system that connects daily class rehearsal practice to a performance, and ultimately a rating. ​

HAPPY HOLIDAYS
By redwood middle school

185 band students, 170 orchestra students and Redwood Middle Music Directors Jon Jow, Isabel McPherson and Jemal Ramirez wish everyone a fabulous festive season, and the best in the New Year at the winter concerts.

Grand Finale Winter Concert performances include Redwood Combined MEGABand, "A Festive Fanfare" by Brian Balmages and RMS Combined Orchestra "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, arr. Bob Phillips.​

​Saratoga Music Dept. presents an exciting line up of events open to all staff, teachers, friends and families  - perfect to get you in the holiday spirit!! Join us for band, orchestra, percussion, choir & jazz concerts. All concerts are free and begin at 7pm. Performances are at Saratoga High School. Seating is on first come, first served basis.

12/6 @ 6:30pm Saratoga Strings Midwest Clinic Preview Concert
The Midwest Clinic is an international conference that has been going on for nearly 80 years with 18-20k international attendees annually. This is a prestigious event and is known as the World Series of symphonic music. 

​Saratoga Strings has been invited to perform in Chicago in December and will be presenting a very special preview concert especially for our Falcon families on Wednesday, Dec 6 at 6:30pm at McAfee Auditorium. The program will feature exciting premiere pieces - stay tuned for details!! Concert is free and seating is on first come, first served basis.

CHOIR PERFORMANCE AT BLANEY PLAZA

Kick off the holidays with a one-of-a-kind Saratoga tradition and catch the SHS Chamber Choir performance with elementary students at the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony! Enjoy the festivities the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, November 24 in downtown Saratoga. The Tree Lighting Ceremony is free to attend and begins at 5:30 pm in Blaney Plaza. 


12/2 @ 11am Los Gatos Holiday Parade
Advanced Band students will be Marching in the Los Gatos Holiday Parade for the first time since 2019!! Come cheer 60+ Marching Band, Percussion and Color Guard Griffins dressed in the impeccable & regal Redwood Blue uniforms. Holiday parade is on Sunday 12/2, 11am in Los Gatos downtown. Perfect opportunity to show your school spirit!!

​Join us for marching band competition - Foothill Band Review at Foothill High School, Pleasanton on Saturday Oct 28, tentative performance time 9:30pm!! Dress in Falcon red, cheer loudly for Saratoga High Marching Band and catch the amazing new production - CALL OF THE UNKNOWN!!

Many thanks to the SHS Music Directors, Instructors, Staff and Alumni students for collaborating and bringing this incredible production and a shoutout to the leadership students!! ​
