SMB Alumni Fundraiser – Poker for Percussion
Saturday, October 25, 2014
Our Hosts: SMB co-President Jennie & Daryn Lau
This year's goal: SHS Percussion Funding
We did it! This year, with everyone's help, we raised over $4,000. A new record.
It was a dark and stormy evening as everyone gathered to celebrate another Alumni Poker Fundraiser, back by popular demand. The rain stayed away during the festive outdoor dinner, and the light drizzle indicated that it was time to come indoors. Nobody really noticed the down pour because of the fun and laughter happening inside Jenny's warm and beautiful home.
Jonathan Pwu welcomed the group and thanked everyone for their attendance and participation. He said the SHS Percussion staff would like a new Marimba, so encouraged everyone to have a lot of fun while raising funds.
We honored past SMB President John Haggarty with a prize before the Poker Tournament started – he is the only patron who has attended every single Alumni Fundraiser since we started these Poker Tournaments - without winning. We felt he deserved a prize for this and hoped it would bring him good luck!
Music staff members who participated in our fundraiser were Aryn Krijnen, Binh Young Tsao, Jon Jow, Jonathan Pwu, Ron Bowman, Scott Krijnen, Tony Lanzino and his wife Tricia. Michael Boitz was also there cheering on the crowd.
Everyone enjoyed the home cooking of members of our committee. The dishes served were:
Indian Rice Pulao with saffron and raisins (Rice Pilaf)
Beef Tenderloin with Madeira Wild Mushroom Sauce
Channa Masala (Garbanzo in a spicy-tangy sauce)
Tarragon Chicken in a cream sauce
Leek, Potato and Morel Gratin
Pastina with peas, carrots and mascarpone cheese
Muttar Paneer (Green Peas and cheese cubes cooked in a delicious spicy gravy)
Caesar Salad with homemade Caesar dressing
Grated Carrot salad with lemony cilantro dressing
Wine (the good stuff) & Beer
We were fortunate to have the same great venue as last year - co–President Jennie Lau and her husband Daryn opened up their stylish home for a second year. It was perfect for the occasion with plenty of room to house our 4 poker tables while the big screen TV played the SF Giants game.
There were plenty of seats to meet other parents and socialize in a comfortable elegant environment – and that was just Jennie's kitchen! Thank you to Jennie and Daryn for allowing us all to invade your home!

Nate Harnack, SHS alum, was a finalist for the European American Music Alliance composer awards.
Saratoga's music programs have produced remarkable alumni! SMB would like to spread the word about their achievements and activities.
And how about our winners? Our tournament winner started the evening spilling his drink on the [new] poker table as he jumped up after winning the first hand. Foreshadowing how his evening would end, he was dealt a Royal Flush! Luckily no drink was in arms distance. Let's congratulate all of the players at The Final Table in order of winning: Dave Harada, Jim Rumbaugh, Tung Le, Rich Selby, Alan Yip, Maureen Barton, Daryn Lau, Susan Nakahira and Jordan Gatti. Our Beginner table top three were: Rhonda Tung, Sheeba Garg and Michael Stek.
